Can tourists use Mercado Pago in Argentina?
Account requirements, card payments and the questions to ask when a shop says it only accepts Mercado Pago.
In this article
You can pay a shop that uses Mercado Pago without opening a Mercado Pago account. Its Point card terminals accept foreign credit cards. Paying its merchant QR codes requires a wallet connected to Argentina’s payment system.
Opening your own Argentine account is a separate question. The public registration screen asks for a DNI, Argentina’s national identity document, or a CUIT, its tax identification number. If you are visiting with only a passport, arrange another payment method before your trip.
What to do when a shop says “Mercado Pago only”
Start by asking which payment methods the shop accepts. If you have no app set up for Argentine QR payments, ask for card payment or cash in pesos first:
¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta o en efectivo?
That means: “Can I pay by card or in cash?”
| What the shop offers | What to do |
|---|---|
| A Mercado Pago Point card terminal | Ask to pay with your foreign card at the terminal. You do not need a Mercado Pago account. |
| A merchant QR code | Use an app that explicitly supports Argentine merchant QR payments. The Mercado Pago logo alone does not tell you whether your app works. |
| An alias or CVU, a wallet account number | Check whether your app supports transfers to those details. QR payment support alone is not enough. |
A CVU identifies a payment account. If your app has no supported way to pay the code or account, confirm another payment method before ordering or taking the service. Choose another business if you cannot agree on one.
If a payment is pending, check with your provider and the merchant before paying again. Keep the payment reference until it is resolved.
Can you open Mercado Pago Argentina with a passport?
The public registration screen we checked on 21 September 2026 offers DNI or CUIT, with no passport option at that step. It uses the number to determine whether the account belongs to you or your business. Mercado Pago Argentina registration.

For a passport-only tourist, this is a reason to prepare another way to pay. Downloading the app or getting a local SIM does not resolve the identity requirement.
Foreign residents are a different case: people with current temporary or permanent residence can apply for an Argentine DNI. Mercado Pago also requires identity verification, including a current document and facial recognition. If you have Argentine tax paperwork but no DNI, check accepted documents with Mercado Pago before relying on an account.
Do you need an Argentine bank account?
You can fund an eligible Mercado Pago account without a separate bank account. Its terms include deposits through authorised cash collection networks, and the wallet has its own CVU for transfers. You still need to complete identity verification. Mercado Pago terms, sections 3.1 and 3.3.
Can you pay a Mercado Pago QR without an account?
You do not need your own Mercado Pago account to pay its merchant QR codes. Mercado Pago accepts other participating wallets. Argentina’s central bank calls this QR interoperability: connected wallets can pay regardless of the brand on the merchant code.
For visitors, the BCRA describes foreign wallets connecting through local payment partners. Access depends on the wallet’s own identity and country requirements.

Before funding an app, check its official help pages or ask support:
- Can I register with my country of residence and passport? Being available for spending in Argentina does not establish who can open an account.
- Can I pay Argentine merchant QR codes, including Mercado Pago? Look for that specific feature. An international transfer service or phone camera is not enough.
- What will I pay, and how do I withdraw unused money? Check funding, conversion, payment and withdrawal costs.
If those answers are unclear, keep card and cash as your plan. For payment-method comparisons and worked cost examples, read our guide to QR payments in Argentina.
Can you use a foreign card at Mercado Pago?
Point terminals support foreign credit cards without requiring you to open a Mercado Pago wallet. Mercado Pago explicitly includes them in its merchant fee schedule. Your issuer still needs to approve the transaction, so check international-use settings and your card’s exchange rate and fees before travelling. The fees on Mercado Pago’s seller page are merchant processing charges.
Ask the cashier to take a card payment at the terminal. If you normally tap your phone, ask for contactless card payment. Point Smart supports contactless cards; scanning the shop’s QR is a separate payment method.
What about online checkouts and payment links?
Some Mercado Pago checkouts offer card payment without an account, as documented for Checkout Pro. The checkout still needs to accept your foreign card and identification details.
If it asks for an Argentine identifier you do not have, ask the merchant for another way to pay.
